Greenheart Participants Volunteer in Orlando
By Erica Maves, Greenheart Career Advancement Program Operations Assistant
One of the best things about working at Greenheart is reading about the fun and exciting events participants experience while on their programs, especially those that have just arrived in the United States. When I learned that I would be traveling to Orlando, Florida to greet incoming Work and Travel participants, I was thrilled. I can’t think of a better place in the United States to spend a summer than in Orlando. From Walt Disney World to Universal Studios, the list of things to do is endless.
After two straight days of orientation and filling out paperwork, the participants were really eager to start having some fun. Our first stop in Orlando was a volunteer event for Feeding Children Everywhere at the beautiful Loews Sapphire Falls Resort. When we arrived, about twenty tables were set up with different stations for volunteers to measure, weigh and package food. Participants had to opportunity to socialize with one another, meet Loews Universal Resort staff members, and talk with people from the surrounding community. Together, we all packaged 64,000 meals! I don’t think we would have been able to package as many meals as we did had it not been for the awesome DJ, who played music from the Spice Girls and Lady Gaga to name a few. Overall, the event was a success and a great start to the program!
