J-1 Intern Shares Her Experience Training and Volunteering In Orlando
By: Alexandria Hunstone, CCI Greenheart J-1 Intern
I moved to Orlando in September 2016 to start my 1 year Internship at the Swan and Dolphin Resort. The past 7 months have been some of the best of my life. I have learnt so much and experienced new things which I never thought I’d be able to. Plus, living in the sun all year round beats the rain and cold of England. The people I have met on this experience are now friends for life and I’ve shared so much with them.
When I first started working in September, the hotel was owned by Starwood hotels. They have now merged with Marriott making them the biggest hospitality company in the world. It will be something I will look back on in years to come and remember that I was a part of that. The Swan and Dolphin has taught me a great deal and has helped me to overcome daily challenges which have then led me to develop skills in recreation, guest services, concierge and now front desk. Every day is different, you never get two guests the same.
Clean the World works with the Swan and Dolphin Hotel and I got the chance to help give back to the community. The task was to sort through old hotel amenities such as shampoo and conditioner so that they could be recycled and reused. Clean the World would then redistribute them to people in need. It felt good to help and volunteer to a valued cause.
During the past 7 months, I have seen and done some amazing things which I would have never been able to do unless I was on the program. I watched the Super bowl, went to Chicago, visited Disney and Universal, hired a car and drove to the beach, plus so much more. All of the above just adds to my overall experience of this program.
It has been a great experience so far and I can’t wait to see what the remaining 5 months of my program will entail.
