Some of the participants said that they had volunteered before in their home countries, and it’s nice to think about how taking part in community service in the U.S. will encourage them to get more involved in their communities back home.

On July 15th, my colleague, Renee, and I were in wonderful Lake Geneva, Wisconsin for a CCI Greenheart Going Greenheart Tour.  We visited a number of participants and host organizations in the area, and in the evening, we participated in a Relay for Life event!

In Lake Geneva, participants work primarily in hotels and restaurants with host organizations such as Grand Geneva Resort, The Abbey Resort, and others. Participants said that their work could be challenging, but they enjoyed these jobs because it gave them a chance to see how U.S. businesses operate and to learn about their host community.

Later that evening, we attended a Relay for Life event held at the Walworth County Fairgrounds.  10 participants joined us to help organize the activities.  We worked on passing out frozen t-shirts for the frozen t-shirt contest (the first to unravel and put on their shirt wins!), and we all enjoyed the colored powder toss that left everyone covered in a cloud of rainbow dust. Then, we helped decorate luminary bags that were displayed by friends and family in honor of the loved ones whose lives had been impacted by cancer.  After sunset, we all took part in a few laps around the track to support funding for cancer research.

The participants didn’t know what to expect at first, but they were really inspired by the local community’s support. Some of the participants said that they had volunteered before in their home countries, and it’s nice to think about how taking part in community service in the U.S. will encourage them to get more involved in their communities back home. All in all, this Going Greenheart Tour was a success!
