My coworker Elissa and I just returned to Chicago after an exciting weekend in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where more than 350 participants from countries all around the world are participating in the Summer Work Travel program! The weekend consisted of fun-filled activities including tours of local host organizations in the Harrisburg area, a volunteer event where more than 70 attendees helped clean up Harrisburg’s City Island, and the annual “Strawberry Soiree.”

The highlight of our trip was certainly the Strawberry Soiree, in which numerous participants, host organizations, and community members attended. A group of Jordanian participants danced to a traditional Middle Eastern tune and our Dominican participants led soiree attendees in the merengue! We also shared a heart-warming moment of silence as we paid respects to our Turkish participants and their families after hearing about the recent events in Turkey.

The weekend was a wonderful opportunity to see participants, host organizations, and community members unite in solidarity with the same goal of promoting cultural understanding and peace.
