Digging through the layers of Sofia, Bulgaria
The four hours spent at St. Prophet Iliya Church in Druzhba 2 were not only fulfilling but fun! We were able to “dig through the layers” of the people within Sofia; we even met international people from other countries while volunteering there!

Our Going Greenheart Tour is going strong, with our most recent stop in Sofia, Bulgaria! Wioletta Olszowiec and I traveled from Poland and the United States, respectively, to meet with Bulgarian partners and American host organizations for the 2016 Summer Work Travel season.
CCI Greenheart returned to Sofia: the thriving and timeless capital of Bulgaria. Although the region isn’t the most populous, Sofia is the epicenter of Bulgaria and boasts an interesting history. While wondering around the city, you may find a modern building standing next to an archeological dig that is two to three layers deep. Apparently, Sofia is a city of layers, with remnants from the Etruscans, Romans, and more!
Although surrounded by incredible sites, CCI Greenheart did not forget about the reason for the trip: hiring young and eager Bulgarians to work and travel in the United States! Almost 100 participants were interviewed by CCI Greenheart and host organizations to find the best fit for their stays in the United States. The job fair was successful, we placed participants to work in various tourist attractions to ensure that they will be immersed in U.S. American culture.
And what is a Going Greenheart Tour without a service project! Along with current participants, alumni, host organizations, and our Bulgarian partner, Wioletta and I helped prepare and cook food for the hungry. The four hours spent at St. Prophet Iliya Church in Druzhba 2 were not only fulfilling but fun! We were able to “dig through the layers” of the people within Sofia; we even met international people from other countries while volunteering there!
March has a busy schedule ahead of us with more job fairs in the Romania, Poland, and China. But let’s face it, meeting participants from around the world is one of the best parts of the job!
