Discovering Volunteer Work with the Five Senses Garden
By: Dan Hou, Work and Travel Ambassador Scholar
Travelling for the first time on the Work and Travel program, Dan Hou (known as Felicity) traveled to Hershey, Pennsylvania from China to work for a local employer. Read about her American adventures in the United States!
This picture shows my first time volunteering in Five Senses Garden. I enjoyed it and learned so much. Shirley (our supervisor) told us the history of the Garden. She is such a great teacher that she should be written into American history!
This is Shirley, and with the help of volunteers, our flowers bloomed. The beauty and feelings I felt this day cannot be told with words. This is an example that of when you work hard and try your best to do something, your results show. It was really nice.
Here I am preparing the newspapers. We put newspapers on the ground and then put dirt on the newspapers to keep nutrition in the soil. I do not like gloves, so I decided to not wear them.
There was only boy that volunteered that day, so he did the hard work. Thanks to his help of carrying heavy things, us girls were able to do other projects. This has been a good experience, because we have never done this kind of volunteer work in China. Life in America has been like this experience so far – to be able to see and do everything.
The girl with sunglasses is our friend who is working in Chicago. We had so much fun with her that when we all go back to Chicago, she said she would come and visit our city. I told her about volunteering with the Greenheart Club and she was so happy to enjoy this day with us. All of us students enjoyed it so much.
