Group Shot Volunteer Event

Go Greenheart!

On August 22nd, the CCI Greenheart Going Greenheart Tour stopped in Richmond, Virginia where a Greenheart Project was held at the FeedMore food bank.  FeedMore food bank serves local children, struggling families, seniors, and any other vulnerable people within the area who are in need of food.  It was a great event to showcase how a little hard work goes a long way in supporting the essentials of one’s community. Twenty-one participants took part in the event, along with CCI Greenheart staff member Benjamin Baney and valued J-1 Summer Work Travel employer, the amusement park, Kings Dominion.

During the event all twenty-one participants worked diligently for three hours assisting FeedMore.  The group was split into two; one group tasked with separating expired food from edible food.  FeedMore receives thousands of pounds of food regularly, and as a result, they need to be very attentive to what is being donated.  Once separated by expiration, participants then organized the food into categories.  The categories included protein, condiments, liquids, canned soup, canned fruit, canned vegetables, etc.  In the end, the group helped organize anywhere from 2,500-3,000 pounds of food!  The other group was assigned with separating damaged or inedible eggs from donated cartons.  This group organized themselves into an assembly line, and went through each egg in the donated cartons.  The participants sparked enjoyment by whistling the Disney song, “Whistle While You Work”, and sang songs native to their home countries.  The participants stated afterwards that they appreciated the volunteer work that they did that day.

After the Greenheart Project, Kings Dominion hosted a pizza party for the participants and their hard work. All of the participants received a Greenheart Project Certificate of participation for the 3 hours that they worked, and were explained how to enter their volunteer hours with CCI Greenheart’s Greenheart Club initiative. In the end, the participants were exposed to an American pastime of volunteering, and had a great time that day.  CCI Greenheart cannot thank the participants, Kings Dominion, and FeedMore enough for the success of the Greenheart Project in Richmond!
