Gaining New Skills in New Hampshire
By: Petra Opekarova, Greenheart Exchange Work and Travel participant and Ambassador Scholar
My name is Petra and I am here to tell you about my days in New Hampshire. But first, I have to tell you something else: I LOVE IT HERE!!! The people are great, I have many new friends and teammates from work, our bosses are awesome and friendly, and Hampton Beach is a beautiful city.
While I have been here, I have learned many new skills at work! I am working at a pizza and ice cream shop, so I come in contact with people all day. The first thing that I wanted to mention is that I have learned to work very hard. I work even harder than I used to in my home country, where I could not even imagine spending so much time at work. But here, I can see that it is possible and what more, it can be fun when you have great people around you!
Second, I have learned how to deal with people. Many customers come into the store every day, and all of them are different. I am learning that talking and understanding all of them is different and can be challenging. In my opinion, this is the best preparation for the future! Sometimes people are awesome, they talk to us nicely and tell us something interesting about their way of life. But other times, there are people who are mad or angry, but we still must approach them with a smile on our faces. That can be a challenge, but that is what teaches us the most.
The last thing I have learned is how to cook new kinds of food! To be honest, I do not think I will often need to prepare fried dough, fried Oreos, or other kinds of food like this in the future, but I am always glad for the possibility to learn something new.
That is all from me now; I hope you all are doing great!
