Gearing up for Summer – Work Programs travel to Ocean City!
By: Leslie Patt, Work and Travel Policy and Compliance Manager
Held at the Clarion Fontainebleau Hotel and Conference Center, the meeting featured speakers from the Seasonal Workforce Committee in Ocean City, US Department of State, and local Social Security Administration, among others. The Department of State stressed communication between employers and sponsors and the health, safety and welfare of the J1 participants as paramount to the success of the program.
Officer Mike Levy from the Ocean City Police Department showed the orientation that is provided to participants while they wait to pick up their
Social Security cards, as the local SSA representatives come to the participants in Ocean City! The Seasonal Workforce Committee even prints thousands of handbooks for the participants with Ocean City-specific information, such as local laws, safety tips, local transportation options, English class schedules, and emergency phone numbers.
The final speaker of the day was Bob Rhode, Emergency Management Planner. Bob discussed Ocean City’s hurricane evacuation plans and how that plan was enacted last year for Hurricane Sandy. Although Sandy did not hit Ocean City directly, they were in the projected path of the storm and evacuated hundreds of participants to safety in Baltimore in a matter of hours, and then back to Ocean City after the storm passed. Employers in attendance at the meeting remarked how their participants had a great cultural experience dealing with the evacuation!
CCI Greenheart also took the time to visit several of our employers in the area as they are preparing for the rapidly approaching summer season. It was great to get out of the cold in Chicago for a few days and meet our wonderful employers. We look forward to a great Summer 2013!
