J Day is a special time of the year when all J-1 Visa sponsors and participants gather in their communities to celebrate the Summer Work Travel program, multiculturalism, and volunteerism. In honor of this day, CCI Greenheart and Premier Aquatics joined forces for the annual Premier Aquatics Lifeguard Olympics and Food Drive in Fairfax, VA!

During the early morning of August 3rd a total of 250 attendees gathered at 4:30AM to participate in the sporting event of the season. Attendees included: local Premier Aquatics lifeguards, a Department of State representative, a representative from the Alliance, fellow J-1 Visa Sponsor Janus, a number of volunteer Fairfax firemen, and 102 CCI Greenheart participants.

The event took place at the Brandywine Swim Club, which was decorated with colorful balloons and setup with a photo booth filled with playful costumes and hats. Excited participants, sporting their crafted bracelets and crowns, began to fill the pool area as electronic house music played. The music grew silent and the games commenced at 5:30AM. As friendly competition filled the air, the three-hour event put the lifeguards’ skills to the ultimate test. Scores were carefully calculated and the winners were announced at 10:30AM.

At the end of the event the Capital Area Food Bank calculated a whopping 980 lbs. in canned food donations, an 11% increase from last year’s 843 lbs. donation! This year’s J Day successfully promoted two key elements of its mission: community service and cultural understanding.
