At the beginning of February, I had the chance to go with several host organizations on CCI Greenheart’s job fair in Jamaica! It was my first job fair and as a native Michigander and current metro-Chicago resident, I wasn’t going to argue with the assignment. Whose weather would you choose in early February- Jamaica’s or Chicago’s? Even if it was for just a week, I chose Jamaica.

What I found there, though, was so much more than just tropical weather and sandy beaches – it was a culture full of joy and laughter!

As part of our Greenheart service project, CCI Greenheart staff, the traveling host organizations, and staff from our partner agency, The Student’s Work and Travel Programme, volunteered at the Jamaica Christian Boys Home. This is a home for boys with mental or physical illnesses and whose parents can’t afford tthe children’s treatment expenses. Staff and host organizations taught the boys how to play Twister and dominoes while the boys showed us the Jamaican equivalent of Sorry and beat us in chess. It was a chance for our host organizations and CCI Greenheart staff to see a side of Jamaica that is often hidden behind the walls and gates of expensive beachside resorts.

At the job fair, we met and interviewed over 150 eager participants! The participants had very specific questions about their job offers since many of them had memorized the details provided to them. For most, it would be their first time outside of Jamaica, so everyone had questions and concerns about where they would be working. I’m sure everyone that I spoke with and hired will have a great time on their program this summer!
