Every community has a homeless population, be it large or small, and our participants took a particular interest in our homeless community in Palm Springs. They were fascinated by the differences they observed between the homeless in Thailand and the homeless here. They were amazed at how kind, social and close our homeless community is. They found it particularly interesting that many of our homeless have animal companions that they care for, often sharing the little bit of food that they have with their furry friends.
This inspired us to partner with a local food bank (FIND- Food In Need Of Distribution) that provides daily meals to our homeless community and replace one of their meals with a lunch that we served at a local park. One of the purveyors that the hotel works with, West Central Produce, found out about what we planned to do and graciously donated all the food needed to serve a lunch that included hot dogs, potato and macaroni salad, potato chips, fruit and water. With the help of my CCI Greenheart contact, Joe Burns, the participants transported, set up and served lunch to nearly 100 people in our community!
The event was easy to coordinate with just a couple of phone calls to the food bank and a quick online application for a free permit to use the park. As you can see from the smiles on their faces, this event was a big success!
