Tongue twisters are phrases designed to be difficult to say and can be a great source of amusement when said incorrectly! Some range from easy and short to very difficult and long. Try some of these famous American English tongue-twisters to make you and your friends’ tongues numb!

Toy boat, toy boat, toy boat.

Irish wristwatch:
Irish wristwatch, Irish wristwatch, Irish wristwatch.

Purple paper people, purple paper people, purple paper people.

The shells she sells are sea-shells, I’m sure.
For if she sells sea-shells on the sea-shore
Then I’m sure she sells sea-shore shells.

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked.
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where’s the peck of pickled peppers that Peter Piper picked?

Woodchuck:
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck
If a woodchuck could chuck wood?
He would chuck, he would, as much as he could,
And chuck as much wood as a woodchuck would
If a woodchuck could chuck wood.

Three sweet switched Swiss witches
Watch three washed Swiss witch Swatch watch switches.

Which washed Swiss witch Swatch watch switch?

Betty Botter:
Betty Botter bought some butter
But, she said, “This butter’s bitter!”
If I put it in my batter
It would make my batter bitter
So she bought a bit of butter
Better than the bitter butter.
Put it in the bitter batter
Make the bitter batter better.
So t’was better Betty Botter
Bought a bit of better butter.

Theophilus Thistle:
Theophilus Thistle, the successful thistle sifter,
In sifting a sieve full of un-sifted thistles,
Thrust three thousand thistles through the thick of his thumb.
If Theophilus Thistle, the successful thistle sifter,
Can thrust three thousand thistles through the thick of his thumb,
See that thou, in sifting a sieve full of un-sifted thistles,
Thrust not three thousand thistles through the thick of thy thumb
