Preparing my trip to America and the experience of the Work and Travel program!
By: Orville Tomlinson, Summer Work and Travel Ambassador Scholar
Leaving Jamaica to come to The United States this year on my third summer participating in the Summer Work and Travel Cultural Exchange Program, I am very excited for more than one reason this year – I am going to have an additional duty and can’t wait to start!
I was chosen by my sending agency to be a participant in the CCI Greenheart Ambassador Scholarship. I have a list of assignments, which I am really pumped up for and I look forward to completing these assignments.
During my last day home I was able to hang out with a few friends, and most importantly cook for my family and a few friends. This can be seen in my video, one of my Summer Work and Travel ambassador scholarship assignments.
Jamaica was warm and beautiful weather before I left and I thought it would be the same here when I got to the US, so I dressed moderately hoping for warm temperatures. I left Jamaica and arrived to the Hollywood International Airport in Fort Lauderdale. While there I had a stay over for over six (6) hours and also an hour delay making it over seven hours. Happily I was travelling with my friend Jesse Richards so we relaxed in comfort and watched a movie on my computer.
My final flight stop was in Bronx, New York where I spent the weekend with my aunt and cousin. I was happy to see her a as I only get to see her during the summer.
I arrived in Portland, ME via bus on May 13th and this was where I really experienced a drastic change it the weather.
After my arrival I went to my work place and did my legal paper work, so I could start working!
The Summer so far for me is a great one as I am really enjoying myself and preparing for greater things. Happily I turned 21 so I am able to go places. I already had a first this summer, when I played pool for the first time!
This Summer promises to be my best as I will seek to be actively engaged in volunteerism while working, travelling and learning more about different cultures.
