#Selfies Taken All Over Colorado
By: Haldis Toppen, Greenheart Exchange Work and Travel Marketing and Outreach Director
Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to the mountains of Colorado where many of our participants have the luxury of working in seasonal positions with the most beautiful view you can imagine. Needless to say, I was jealous!
The Rocky Mountains is a destination that makes you feel so connected with nature and in awe of the power of our environment. To celebrate this, I joined a volunteer project led by the YMCA of Snow Mountain Ranch where we acted as “sherpas” and brought needed items to a mountain hut. This mountain hut, called Broome Hut, is a place where hikers can lay their head at night. The caveat is, whoever stays there must take all waste they have with them. Even the toilet is compostable! As a flatlander from Illinois, hiking up a steep mountain was a bit hard, but once we got there, we saw some of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen; views that our participants see very day.
In addition to volunteering, I was able to visit many participants throughout the mountains. While I did not have the chance to hike with each one of them, I made sure that we created our own “beautiful” views by taking selfies together!
