Work and Travel: Falling in love (with a country)
By: Dingxin Ouyang, Work and Travel Participant Summer 2015
My friends say it’s very brave of me to go to an unfamiliar country. I say it may be an adventure, and I will enjoy it. All I want is to experience more. I’m still young, and I don’t want to regret my life when I’m older. That’s why I decided to take part in CCI Greenheart’s Summer Work Travel program.
Before coming to the U.S. I read a book about American culture. It helped me to gain a better understanding of how and why Americans interact. There are a lot of differences between the Chinese and American cultures. I think what draws my attention most is how you can talk to strangers and always get a response in the United States. In China, this would never happen. We were brought up to never talk to strangers. So I feel quite good here. Everyday I say hello to people passing by, waving my hands and smiling. Of course, something both cultures have in common is that Chinese are friendly as well.
Everything here is so different, attractive, and interesting to me. I love the small town that I live in called Moab in Utah. People are very nice, and I can feel their honesty. It makes me even more sure of my decision to travel the United States. I always try to communicate more with local people, so I can learn more about this fantastic country.
When it’s my turn to have a day off, I don’t waste any time sleeping. I hang around, walk into almost every store. I’ve also visited the local museum, post office, library, and the park. Also, I want to be a volunteer in my spare time. There are several national parks here. You can imagine how amazing this place is! Recently, some friends and I visited Dead Horse Point State Park. It was awesome! I have never seen such grand scenery! It looks like the landscape is hugging the whole world. I would describe the Colorado River as a tender lady.
I’m just one ordinary girl, but all I really want is to be a girl full of stories and experiences. In the rest of my days in the U.S., I will have more gorgeous adventures.
Thank you for reading about my simple joys. I hope you have a good time on your Work and Travel program. Once you are here, you too will fall in love.
