Work and Travel participant introduces Chinese culture to host community
Seeing the kids’ smiling faces makes me the happiest person in Moab!
By: Palmer Chow, Work and Travel Summer 2016 Participant
I have been in the U.S. for a month and a half as a participant in CCI Greenheart’s Work and Travel program. When I first arrived, I had a lot to learn since just about everything here is different from China! I’m calling this experience ‘a fresh start.’
After I adjusted to living and working in the United States, I searched for a meaningful volunteering opportunity. I found the Moab Valley Multicultural Center and now volunteer there once a week! I care for children and we make crafts, play games, read books, and learn about other cultures. I also teach Chinese classes and I organized a party for Chinese Night and my birthday. Seeing the kids’ smiling faces makes me the happiest person in Moab!
I also visited Utah State University Moab where a friend and I started a Chinese Club! We teach students basic Mandarin Chinese, handwriting, and culture. Everybody is enjoying the classes!
I will keep teaching more and more American people about China and I will keep learning more about the United States. I plan to make the most of this trip and know all I can about the U.S., its people, and culture!
